Winter Herb Garden How-To

Winter Herb Garden How-ToWant to keep fresh herbs alive all winter long- well you can by having your own indoor winter herb garden.

How nice would it be to make fresh mint tea, or add fresh chives or parsley to your sandwich or meal during the cold winter months.

Here are some tips to help you achieve your own winter herb garden

Planting

Pots

  • use pots with a minimum 6 inch diameter
  •  use terra cotta or clay pots
  • make sure pots have drainage holes and sit in a tray

Soil

  • use organic potting soil with a pH between 5-7
  • add some perlite or vermiculite to the soil

Lighting

  • herbs need light so place them in south facing window and turn them so all sides get light

Moisture

  • water herbs well, but allow the soil to dry before watering again

Fertilize

  • water the plants and then use a small amount liquid fertilizer or organic fish emulsion every 2 weeks

What herbs are best to grow indoors?

Chive

Lemon Thyme

Marjoram

Basil

Mint

Parsley

Oregano

Rosemary

If you are bringing your herbs in from outdoors, remember to check for insects. Prepare a tepid soapy water solution in a bowl or the sink. Turn the herb over and with your hands cover the earth so it doesn’t fall out and wash the leaves in the soapy mixture.

I love to make this recipe any time of year, but especially in the winter months as it reminds me of summer
