As a nutrition coach and someone who has had multiple food sensitivities I know how eliminating foods from the diet can really improve your health and well being.

An elimination diet is a way to find out what foods are causing you to react. Removing foods from your diet that you suspect are playing a role in your health is key in elimination.

You want to become symptom free before you start to re- introduce foods back into your diet.

Many people go for food allergy testing, but they are not 100% accurate and are also expensive, so that is why I recommend an elimination diet.

Many parents see a huge difference in their hyperactive child when they remove suspect foods from their child’s diet- an elimination diet is a way to know if the child’s behaviour is food related.

The first step is to figure out what foods are causing your issues. Some people now what these foods are and others are literally starting from scratch. When beginning an elimination diet we remove highly reactive foods like gluten, dairy, corn, sugar, soy and sometimes eggs.

It is advised to keep a food diary where  you record what you ate and how you felt- this helps you figure out what foods you may be reacting to. Since foods can stay in your body for up to four days it is important to keep track of what you are eating.

Once you reach a place where you are no longer reacting, feel okay and are symptom free, we start to re- introduce foods back into the diet, one at a time. One new food a week, again keeping track of how you feel. If a reaction occurs we remove that food again and leave it out of the diet for awhile, all while continuing to add in seeing whether you react or not.

This is when you really see if the food has been creating you to feel unwell or have a reaction.

Once you know what foods are playing a role in your health it is advised to leave them out of the diet for at least 3- 6 months before trying to re- introduce them back in. At that time we introduce them and rotate them to see if by rotating them you can tolerate them.
